N scale UP coal burning turbine #8080

I reached out to Scale Trains about the possibility of producing a N scale UP coal burning three unit turbine. They did give us the Big Blows and first gen turbines which are awesome and are now taking orders for the third Big Blow run. That tells you they sell.
I figure us turbine guys would want one in the collection.     They replied with: it is a good idea and probably would do one but the issue is try to find plans.

MTH has one so there must be some sort of plans for it out there somewhere.   So there you have it. I'd love to see one of them running around my layout.

I would buy one of every large UP turbine or diesel that the make. I have one each from their first two runs. DDA40X or DD35 also come to mind.

There are plans for all the big UP engines in "Giants of the West, by George Cockle, published by Overland Publications. Plans are also found in "Motive power plan package of the Union Pacific System", Kratville publications. I am pretty sure they are out of print, but copies are out there.

Very much out of print. Last time I priced the Cockle book used, it was going for several hundred dollars. Lots of classic UP fans out there.

You could always get out your modeling tools and build one. The PA will be pretty easy to do even. You'll scratchbuild one before someone brings it out in plastic.

Have a friend well along on a 3D printed version of the turbine unit, plus the odd detail bits for the PA. He's on TRW from time to time, so I won't steal his thunder beyond the mention.

Frankly, that's a valid point. The coal turbine was as much of an oddity as UP's early steam turbines that survived only a few months. Not really commercially viable models because as ill-fated experiments their windows in history are very small. Now the stuff I mentioned - the B+B-B+Bs - were big deals on the mainline in the '50s and '60s, so anybody wanting representation of UP power in those decades needs to be able to reach beyond 1st- and 2nd-generation Geeps and SDs.

I always had an interest in the coal burning turbine as well. I have a PA1 and a Centipede drivetrain in a project box. The tender looks tough to do.
Good to know a 3D print might come about. I would be interested.
There are plans and pictures in the "Turbines Westward" book by Thos Lee. I bought a copy when it just came out (#545 signed!). The more recent "UP in the Turbine Era", by A.J Wolfe (Withers pub) also has pictures.
I bought my copy of "Giants of the West" from Perry's Hobbies back in 1988 when they had one copy left. Paid $29.95 !

As @C855B mentioned, I am in fact in the middle of a 3D printed coal fired turbine. We have the turbine shell about 90% complete, and just last weekend we ordered parts for a custom tender with power pick-ups. It has been nearly a 3-year project, but we plan to have an operating model this year!

I'd buy a UP 8080. I like the big and unique power.

A Veranda next is the logical choice for ScaleTrains since much of the tooling is already done.  AND, it's what I want...   :D

I got my "Giants of the West" Cockle book off the shelf to look at it...and the first 20 pages fell out of it onto the floor!!  Bad binding job.  It's okay, I wasn't planning on selling it anyway!!

Out of my three UP turbine books, it has the most comprehensive coverage of UP's turbines, with engineering drawings and some rare "looking down" on the roof photos.

Cheerio!

The only "UP" turbine I want is #50 - but in GE demonstrator #101 paint.
Was tested on the NKP (!), PRR, UP and SP from 1948 to 1951.   Never sold.

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
