The person who made that definitely has a steadier hand than I do.

That's the first model I've seen with a capacitor that is physically larger than the motor(s).

I don't see any advantage in all of the work to build the chassis- I have to think that one of the small Tomytec or Kato chassis would fit, and probably cost less than the motors, gears and other parts needed to build one out of a dummy chassis. But the lighting is very cool.

One of the upsides to boxcabs is that they have a lot of room inside, relative to their overall size.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

Those are stepper motors and they make all the magic happen. Any chassis would need the motor swapped.

stepper motors ?? might be .. they look like they have four wires [each] to them ....  wonder what size of magnet wire he is using .... pretty small, lol ....
i have a boxcab [in HO] and it's small enough .....

nice job on his unit ....

To be able to have that kind of control I wouldn't care if it was a clown horn on repeat

Probably not.  Stepper motors by design (because they rotate by stepping in sudden jerky motion) are noisy. I used to work on large plotters driven by steppers, and those used to "sing" while working.  That jerky motion is then transmitted through all the gears, making it for a noisy drive train.

My sentiments exactly.  I get that DCC with sound is not for everybody, but how is that close-up hornets’ nest sound effect acceptable for anyone?  :P

Maybe it's a brain doctor turned train doctor .

Probably because most models don't include sound, so in those cases, our brains factor all the background noise out?
