C&O covered hopper decals (pre chessie)
« on: August 29, 2021, 11:26:57 PM »

Hi,
Was wondering if someone could point me to a source for these n scale decals.
I have some gray covered hoppers (ps4000, acf3650, acf3560) in other schemes I was hopping to remove the road names and reporting numbers (and keep the other data), for early 1960s to early 1970s.
I’ve ordered from microscale before, but their website appears to only have chessie covered hopper decals in n scale.
Cheers

If all you need are the heralds and reporting marks, do they have to be "covered hopper" decals?  You might be able to find the stuff on another type of car.

Alan, check out Steel Valley Models. They have quite a lot of different decals for pre-Chessie in N and HO. You can do a search on Google and it will point you to them. If you are on FB, check out their page. I have several of the "Moonshine" cars they made decals for.

Thanks Nkalanaga, Unfortunately the only other n scale decals for pre-chessie C&O I’ve been able to find were for piggyback flatcars (font is white) or earlier period open hoppers which I think the font is a different type and white as well.

Thanks GM50, will check them out.  Hopefully they post to Australia.

Oh well, it was worth a try!  I remember, 40-50 years ago, lettering a lot of cars, for various roads, with Walthers HO heralds and N data.

Black is hard to find for many roads, unless one can find refrigerator or covered hopper decals.

Take a look at this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/264493262625?hash=item3d9506e721:g:SXMAAOSwTuRdf5av

I can't tell what size the heralds are, but if the heralds are close you'd at least have that.

Micro Scale decals has a set. Not sure if it's too early or not era 1935-1956.

Northeast decals also made some black/dark blue C&O decals. eBay has a few:

Northeast also made a specific set for the covered hopper, their part number is C&O 15.

I wonder if K4 reads The Railwire, or if it's just a coincidence?
