Jerry, I don't think you mentioned what version of MS Windows is on that PC. Win 10?  Are you installing the software (especially the USB drivers) as administrator?  Some low-lever stuff (liek hardware drivers) might have to be installed as administrator user.

The PC is running Windows 10- yes. This PC is old, started has a Vista and up dated over the years.
I am just down loading the driver listed and installing-did not see anything about having to be as administrator?
So I will have to research that-

Could this be what I am looking for to install the correct driver?
The PC is running Windows 10 but started has a Visa OS.
I see in my devise manager that the USB is not connected?
I don't know how to correct this--
Any help with is?
Thanks

Download Download (1.71 MB)
USB driver for FDTI Chipset and Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8
Language: , Date: 07.12.12, Version: 1.1.0

Windows XP / Vista / 7 driver for the adapter cable shipped with the LokSound Programmer 53451. This Driver is for cable with FDTI chipset only. Usually, you don't Need this Driver for Windows 7 or Windows 8 (please try to use the built-in Driver), but if you find Problems you should install this one. Please REMOVE the cable from the Computer Prior to Installation. Also, you will Need Admin rights on your computer to install.

Jerry, this YouTube University instructional video for a fix for this USB port issue is maybe what you need.  There are similar videos on YoTube so you can search for more apt alternatives depending on your exact issue.
Good luck

Try installing a formatted SSD hard drive in your laptop and download the latest WIN 10 and then download your ESU programming software.
I’ll bet that will solve your dilemma!

Got the hard drive out, debating has to, is it worth the cost. I see SSD can run between about $60.00 to $150 depending on how many gb’s you would like.

Jerry, have you tried any of the earlier hints?  I really don't think your OS is *THAT* messed up.   Did you try installing the USB driver for the serial adapter cable as administrator (as in Reply #17)?

Then after you connected the cable to a USB port, go to the start menu and search for "device manager", then expand the COM ports to see what shows up.

Also, there is a small program called USBview. Download it from https://sourceforge.net/projects/usbview/, check for viruses, then run it.  It shows you what it sees plugged into all the USB ports. You can also select a live view which will show you what is being plugged in and unplugged.  The display is somewhat technical, but you should see activity as you insert and remove the serial port USB "dongle".

You should look at what Steve posted.  When the changeover to USB from Serial Ports happened, the mapping of the COM ports became an issue.  Some older software was hard coded to only work on a certain port.  Some Operating Systems were not easy to try and change COM Ports but it looks like Windows 10 will allow you to do it.

I would see what COM the USB adapter is on and try some different COM ports.

I replied to SSD with out thinking what computer I was talking about .
The hard drive that I have removed is from the LapTop.
The PC is the one I am having problems getting the ESU Programer to work.
What I saw in the PC under devise manager was that com port for serial was to com port 4.
But it is not connected- also noted that to install the driver I need to do has an amidister - that is way above my pay grade.
I have a friend that is computer savay
He is going to help me with that.
Sorry fro the mix up.

Interesting.  Is the COM4 present even with the ESU USB/serial adapter?  That likely means that COM4 is a hardwired COM port on the motherboard. If yes, connect the LokProgrammer 9-pin cable to the 9-pin connector on the back of the computer and then change the preferences in the LokProgrammer to use COM4.  Does that work?  You might have to change the COM ports settings in Device Manager (like the baud rate), but I would think it should be usable.  In LokProgrammer you can change which COM port is to be used under Tools->Program Settings->LokProgrammer.

The reason for ESU using the USB/serial adapter is becuase most current computers do not have built-in COM ports like  the other desktops had.
