Bachmann Gas/Electric Doodlebug

I understand these suffer from the same issue as the Proto 2000 HO split gear. I have two that thump.  I believe the solution is to re-power with Japan motor/gear.  My question is which one and is it available for direct order from Japan as I don't think they are for sale in USA ?  I think some have done the repair but is it worth the effort?  I know it depends on what you want and the amount of pain you are willing to suffer is all subjective.

Don't fear ordering from Japan, works better than you think as long as you are patient, and hope that shipping prices return to pre-pandemic levels.   Looks like they are already coming back down.

I had split gear fails on mine to the point the wheels actually fell off, and repowering with a stretched Tomytec mechanism worked wonders.   Very happy with the results.

Mine was definitely a first generation mechanism of the Doodlebug, and even when it was new, it was a very poor performer - shelf queen.

If you decide to retrofit a Japaneses power chassis, like others have said, ordering from Japan is easy and reliable.  I never had a problem.

On eBay, plaza Japan is an excellent dealer: https://www.ebay.com/str/plazajapan
Hobby search Japan is another great online shop (I just ordered a kit from them few weeks ago): https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/rail/  The search is a bit awkward, but they carry lots of spare parts and N scale powered chassis.
