Man, I was at the dentist when I got the email for SD50/60s with Ditch Lights and got excited.

Now I see the SP are just like the original run, without ditch lights, which they had them in Speed Lettering, and into full UP repaint.

SP 5504 had them in 2000

SP 5517 had ditch lights in 1992 (Brand New repaint at the time too, so means it came out with ditch lights, which could most likely be the consensus with all the SP/DRGW Speed Lettered SD50s)

I guess Atlas is saving me some money, as they aren't even listing undec versions for a SD50 with ditch lights.

I took apart my SD60e's to switch out the 73199 decoder for the V5 58721 and noticed the light pipes for the ditch lights are separate.  It could be fairly easy with the new decoder which has 3 lights on the underside on each end to re-route the light pipes for true alternating ditch lights.

Anybody remember when the Walters Cryogenic Reefers first came out they were just a reduced size HO model and nobody had considered N Talgo trucks mounted differently ?  They wouldn’t even stand on the rail without falling over!  Looks like Atlas took this into account....

I rebuilt all of mine  about two years ago with body mounted couplers, 100T trucks, new brake wheels and etched crossover platforms. Looks like Atlas did exactly the same thing. one or two Cryo Trans and Simplot cars for me.

Really glad they are running these. I felt these would never be run again because they were used for such a short time.

I would definitely be in for a C&EI unit (or 2, if they did 2#s or unnumbered) if they were to run it again in N scale (they probably didn't paint many in the C&EI scheme the first time around- which I missed out on).  Used to watch these moving coal hoppers around as a kid in Southern Illinois.

I'll probably throw in for a couple of the Crowley 40 reefer containers - that's a common scheme here in Gulfport loading out bananas from south America.  The Cryotrans reefers may come home too - we see a lot of those old and weathered going back and forth as well.

It's probably just me, but I bought several of the initial SD 50/60 Atlas locos years ago, and they were among the biggest disappointments I have seen among Atlas products in terms of running, pulling, etc. (the Alco 630 being the other I am familiar with)  Plus, I don't think they reached huge numbers on the prototype.  And yet, they re-run them often, with the NS schemes seemingly pretty popular.

Have they improved the drive? (My 630 is a sound unit, brand new, and doesn't pull well, just as it didn't before?  Basically, I just don't get why this seems to be one of their most frequent re-runs.  That said, ongoing kudos to Atlas for producing what are sure to be less volume selling road names.  And, if someone tells me they are better locos than they used to be, I will probably get one of the B and P for my little switching layout, which I can dream is a subsidiary, because, well....., I like that paint scheme and have several from different makers.

You might be seeing the "cracked universal" symptom on your 6-axle locos.  IIRC, there were couple of designs and both are prone to cracking on the motor or worm shaft, causing them to slip and have very anemic pulling power.
