Oh, so the roof is removable?  Or am I misunderstanding how you will do the milling?  I envisioned just taking a long mill and thinning the walls from the inside.

All roofs are removable if you're brave enough.

The die cast floor installed will be sufficient the keep the sides sturdy for milling. Industrial double-sided tape will secure the model to the milling table.

Sounds like you are going to mill out the opening from the outside?

I had in visioned milling the inside of the shell to a depth that opens the gaps in the wall and also making the walls thinner and more realistic.

Milling each opening from the side.. while more tedious is also more accident proof.

  • The roof is not removeable
  • The sides are no thicker than other N stock cars currently on the market
  • The slats can be milled out from the outside with the diecast floor in place, as the floor will keep the sides from flexing
  • The model can be held securely to the milling table with two-sided industrial tape
The body snaps into the floor chassis with tabs that are similar to those on the Rapido passenger cars.  The walls cannot be thinned from the inside without devising another method of mounting the floor.  Also, while milling between the slats would no longer be an issue, keeping the body perpendicular to the milling table and keeping the sides from bowing would be.  It's easier from an orientation standpoint to have the model flat on its side and mill from the outside with a milling bit with a diameter less than the gap height.  It's easy enough to get the two corners of each rectangle and let the CNC machine mill each space.

The inside face of the doors are inset, as evident in the photo, so the door thickness is the same as the car side thickness.  Therefore, it would be difficult to mill the back of the doors from edge to edge without risking damage to the sides.

Ok, I had the wrong ideal about the process.  Having a CNC mill will sure make the process easier.

Also, since the metal floor is rather thick, the bottom gaps will have to be carefully milled not to cut into the floor.  Those will not be see-through.
