I'm amazed that they keep driving the damn things. Isn't safety and/ or damage avoidance a tangible part of the definition of  'engineer'; or are they really just 'drivers' after all?
cheers

And the RTC calling to ask you to inspect your power, because a town 15 miles back has a grass fire!  :D

I assume a fire-suppression system is not something locomotive designers think about much.

Emd 645 series with turbos used to often blow their turbo clutches and give that effect as the turbo internals disappeared up the stack in a shower of sparks and flames.

Pennsy F units actually had a fire suppression system in them.

Hilarious, they filmed the fire department scene out at Aqueduct.  Then they all went to 3B's in Duncannon for ice cream.

You notice they never said anything about breathing protection for the crew while running around a smoke filled compartment to pull pins, open valve and use the hose.

Never fight a fire on a locomotive.  Stop the train and GTFO, contact the dispatcher and let professional firefighters take care of the fire.

There's a prototype for everything.
If you can't make it perfect, make it adjustable.

Yeah, I was wondering about that.
