Can anyone provide any info on the train in this photo?
« on: March 12, 2021, 10:54:38 AM »

A friend of mine found some old photographic plates, and one had this photo of a train on it. He is interested in learning more about it. My friend says the locomotive number appears to be 2049. The headlight seems to have a pretty big diameter compared to other steam locomotives. He did not see any notes from the photographer etched into the edge of the plate.

Not much to go on, but does anyone have any ideas about this train or its location?

Thanks,
Bart

Well it appears to be a 4-6-2 with a Belpaire firebox - so that narrows it down!

Some more info - the photographic plate was found in an old house that my friend was cleaning out in Akron, Ohio.  I am guessing that the photographer would probably be doing most of his photography close to his home location.

I'm going with a Great Northern Ry. 4-6-2, judging by the headlight and numberboard on the smokebox door.  Unlikely to be a Pennsylvania RR steamer (the other road with steam locomotives with Belpaire fireboxes), because this locomotive does not have the keystone-shaped numberboard on the smokebox door.

Hope this helps,

Depends on how old the photo is. They Keystone shape was added later to many locos.

I am leaning towards this being a PRR K2 pacific, note the nearly identical construction on the area under the firebox:

Yeah, that just doesn't look like the front of a PRR smokebox.  The headlight would be highly unusual and the number plate would be highly unusual.  Great Northern is feasible.  And if it's not that, some sort of Baldwin demonstrator?  Finally, second-hand ex-PRR locomotive could be an option.

PRR K4 in the old “Lines West” styling.

It could be an earlier K class, but it’s definitely a PRR Lines West K.

Looks more like the K2 than the K4 ( running gear and air tank)..

I'm not saying you're wrong but the sand dome on the two look different.  The one in the above link looks more elongated and wraps around the boiler more like a USRA dome.  In the original photo, it looks smaller and rounder.  Could just be the different angles of the photos though.
