Oh, I forgot to mention in my previous post.

There were at least FOUR tooling revisions on the shell, and even more (as many as eight) shell and chassis revisions in total.

1: Original version. Early (black) clam shell era. 0-6-0 only. Piping and detail below the cab fill in the visual gap.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bachmann-N-Scale-0-6-0-USRA-Switcher-Pennsylvania-No-4081/224343898576

2: Revised model. Late (blue) clam shell, carboard box and early (blue) jewel case era. Chassis was modified to allow addition of pilot and trailing trucks to make a 2-6-2. Most detail below the cab was truncated. Minor tooling changes to the pilot when dumby knuckle couplers added.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/N-Scale-Bachmann-50598-Unlettered-0-6-0-Switcher-Steam-Locomotive/333909822363

3: 2nd revision. Late (yellow) jewel box era. Shell totally retooled sometime after magnetic couplers were added. Detail in general is more crisp. Parting lines are removed from top of boiler. Bell is a bit smaller. This version still used the box motor and therefore had cutouts on the cab front for the motor to fit.

4: 3rd revision. Late (yellow) jewel box era. Essentially the same tooling as 2nd revision, but holes for box motor were removed when coreless motor was added.

That is some good historical info Daniel, but references linking to eBay listings will not last very long.

Spookshow has a good write-up on these locos, but yours is clearer on the differences.

But according to Spook's page, the latest motor used in these is

That ain't a coreless motor.  :)

Let me guess Tim; a 1077 for the BC museum train?

Yes, exactly.  The slopeback tender has the perfect wheelbase for the MB 1077.

Tim,
The fiberglass circuit board piece is the stock drawbar that comes on the model. Here is a step by step.

Thank you; that will be my first step to get the engine running with the new tender.

I just took delivery of one of these 0-6-0’s from a dealer on eBay that is selling them from the Bachmann train sets. No jewel case and both couplers are one piece dummies, but the price was pretty good.

These little critters are sweet! Ran well right out of the packaging. Slow speed is not that great, but I expect it to run in some. Walked off with nine MT 33’ coal hoppers with metal wheels on my little JFRTM layout. I’m sure it could have pulled more, but that’s all I need from a switcher. I hope to make it Morehead & North Fork #14.

Got a link to the seller if there are more?

Thanks - interestingly, the vendor shows two pictures, and they are of two different revisions of the Bachmann 0-6-0.  The first picture is quite old (has Rapido couplers, for example), the second picture is the latest, best revision.

If you would have told me back then that I would be designing new 3D parts while my last 3D parts were printing and waiting for them to finish so I can print the new 3D design. I wouldn't believe it.  :D

Didn't they do them in HO scale about 15 years ago?

EDIT: yeah they just added DCC and sound.

The Bachmann post shows samples of the new vastly if not completely retooled HO USRA 0-6-0 with a new tender.  If we can get a comparable N Scale version I will be in for two.
Of course it won’t be another Big Boy…just a locomotive that was used by a bunch of railroads all over the US and not just seen on one railroad by a few cows in the middle of Wyoming!
