Clearly you haven't finished Dave Abeles book on signals yet - theres actually an example pic of this in there somewhere.Signal it. Use something not standard (dwarf, lower quadrant semaphore, ball and rope) to emphasize the point.
A dwarf signal and dispatcher controlled switch. When the switch is lined for the switching lead the signal is always flashing red (restricting), when lined for the main, yellow (approach). This way the yard job never has to contact the dispatcher for a signal when switching the lead.
If he wants to amaze and confound visiting operators, it could be lunar/yellow, as well. Saw lots of that protocol in the era he's modeling. There are a few points on my layout that will get this treatment.

On the UP at least, a yellow over lunar would be "Approach Restricting" which would mean the engineer would have to be prepared to be at restricted speed before passing the next signal, unless your talking about a signal from the yard lead to the main. But at the signal on the main before the signal into the yard he could have a red over yellow over lunar (Diverging Approach Restricting) that could really mess with peoples minds.
Oh, I meant a single dwarf head displaying yellow OR lunar. I over-use the '/' in my online prose. FWIW, I have the UP rule book from my modeling period right here on my desk. You're right, Diverging Approach Restricting would leave them scratching their heads, for sure! I think there's an interlocking/yard entry already on my layout where this aspect would be totally appropriate.
