The great irony is that if I stretch things out I lower the grade. However, I think I can easily solve that by adding some flat spaces in there too, for even more train handling challenges.

For switching, unless it's called for by the type of setout, putting towns/industries on flat areas is a great help.  Which can also help with keeping the grade something like what you want.

Yep. The whole siding is flat, which works out pretty well.

So I've been playing with the plan a bit more. I don't like that loop at the end, so I'm reversing it and making it a big balloon.

But now that I've been looking at it, I've been thinking more and more "should New Freedom really be the end?". I could move New Freedom further around clockwise and then use Parkton MD as the bottom of things. Parkton would add in even more fun since it's the end of a commuter district from Baltimore (served with RDCs and maybe a locomotive hauled train).



That then makes me think that maybe the passing siding should be the new New Freedom, or at least partly.

Add Parkton, backdate the layout and you could run that locomotive hauled passenger train with Baldwin Centipedes.
