So, at the risk of throwing a (tiny) spanner in the works, what exactly is your goal with this layout, specifically with this plan? I re-checked the start of the thread, and it just talks about those aspects of the prototype give you wood, but not the specific goals of the layout, as in functionally, operationally, etc. Forgive me if this is self-evident, but it's not apparent to me...

No no, no problem at all.

There are a couple of goals.

Giving me and a couple people at a time (think 3-4) the chance to play with a bunch of things I've been thinking about for a while.

Giving me something fun and slightly challenging to build that's still within my capabilities.

Being operations oriented, while still beautiful.

Recreating the feeling of a moderately busy Conrail secondary mainline (not Horse Shoe Curve, not a sleepy branchline).

Challenging the skill of operators with helper operations.

To dig deeper at DKS point (maybe?).. what are the Ops rolls for 3-4 people? A yard job, an over the road crew etc... just curious to hear how these groups would interact (out of interest from someone who is designing a similar-ish Ops centric layout). 2 man crews?

As much a I cheer on the use of nice long turnouts, there’s a point when you’re really just using up space for diminishing returns. I’ve used #9’s anywhere a passenger train might venture and they seem plenty long enough for the job.

I'm glad it's a basement window instead of a living room one. It's not quite perfect but I think it's nothing some caulk won't clean up!

Yep. I've got some hanging around if needed. We'll see when I get into it tomorrow.

But first we have to pickup a foster pup for the night and deliver him to the rescue's kennel tomorrow morning. The things we do for dogs...
