I realized that I have a gap in my freight car knowledge: I know relatively little about the cars in lumber and other building product service in the late 70s and early 80s, specifically cars used by CN and CP.

What can you guys tell me about the cars that would be in this service and what models might represent them?

Bulkhead flatcars and double door boxcars. Green doors on CN boxcars indicated lumber/wood products service. Yellow doors paper/newsprint. Door colour coding fell out of favour by the 1980s, so repaints started to just have brown doors.

There's a company called Prairie Shadows which offers a model of a 52'8" bulkhead flatcar used by CN, British Columbia Railway and other Canadian roads (but notably not CP). CP had to be a bit different and you'd have to scratchbuilt the 51'6" flatcars they had with angled bulkheads.

No photos on this page, their site seems a bit clunky, but you can google image search. The models are made for PS by Rapido Trains, FYI. They also have an exclusive N scale version of the 52'6" mill gondola Rapido made in HO scale.

There is also the 66' flatcar kits from Briggs Models that have been featured on this forum before.

Oh man, that reminds me, I've got to keep an eye out for those bulkhead flats!
I have one of the gons in the most important scheme they did: Puddington Valley. It's a great car.

1967 delivery scheme for this series. So only ~10 years old still in the late seventies. I've also seen at examples of the previous series from 1964 delivered in brown survive without getting repainted including this one remarked for QGRY:

No models for that car in any scale though. Usual go-to is to use something like a PS-1 as a stand-in, but everything about it is wrong (Ends, roof, height)

I have one of the Briggs bulkhead flatcars on order, along with NP log cars.   They've been on order since September of 2019, so if you do order one of their flatcars, don't be in any hurry!

Paper cars were in the 4xxxxx range but the double door cars for lumber service were all in in 5xxxxxx range.

Look at double door 50' boxcars in the 55xxxx range and 40' boxcars in the 58xxxx-59xxxx range. You'll find paper & general service 40'ers with 8-9' doors in the 56xxxx-57xxxx range. The 40xxxx and low 41xxxx range was pretty much where the 50' paper cars went. 42xxxx were assigned grain service.

DWC (vs. DWP) reporting marks indicated "International Service" cars, and these would mix with regular CN cars for shipments to the US.

Oh *****, I have one of those DD DWP cars. Although I removed the roofwalk already before actually looking at photos of them in that era... lol.

Guess I better fix that.

Well running board removal started after 1966...  Of course that one car is freshly shopped in 1972 with the running board intact and things took a while to get done...

On the CP side:

50' double door boxcars in the 200xxx-202xxx range.

40' double door boxcars in the 29xxxx range.

40' paper service boxcars 50xxx-60xxx, 50' paper service boxcars 8xxxx.

Right? I thought I was safe, but EVERY photo I see of those cars has roof walks. So who knows.
