I have 3 of the planetary and a dozen of the non planetary gearboxes. The non planetary are not much use to me..104.4:1 and like 500 something :1 reduction. But they use the same assembly techniques, just no gear teeth in the case. If you want some of them to play with, they are yours.

With the non planetary units there is nothing to cut down, is there?  They might be useful for some animations, turntable maybe.  I guess if you really have zero use for them I'd be happy to put them in the bag of bits for the unknown project. :)

I agree I don't think they use any glue or LocTite on that threaded insert.  If there was a way to hold the gear case tightly enough to stand up to pulling on that insert so that it would pull right out, that would be really cool.  You will have to extend the motor shaft with tubing and some more shaft and the pinion on the end of all that if your intent is to remove the back planetary stage and leave the gear case at its 16:1 length.  Something I have thought about in a setup like this would be to remove the back planetary stage, extend the motor shaft with tubing, and in place of that rear gear stage, put a FLYWHEEL.  You would have a flywheel running at 4x the speed of the output shaft, which would awesome, and it would be contained inside the gearcase.  If could only be about a 9mm diameter flyweel, but still, it might do wonders.

Instead of clamping onto the gear case, you might be able to make a precision fixture that goes over the back, and has a hole in it just precisely a little large diameter than the threaded insert, but smaller than the case diameter, so when you pull on the insert, the back of the case is held against this circular hole in a plate of some kind.

Oh, and the thread on that insert is going to be a bear.  It is M5.5 x 0.5.   A very uncommon one.  I found a tap for that thread once and bought it.  But I've never been able to find any bolts or a die for that particular thread.  So making or finding something you can screw into the insert to pull it out may not be easy.  I suppose I could use that tap... just screw it into the insert and pull on that.

Thanks for that info, Max.  As far as the thread, for the puller it's a male so I would just single point it.  Female might take some grinding gyrations or maybe an expensive pre-ground boring bar. :(  I suspect this will all make sense once I see one.

If I recall from the pictures you've posted there isn't a full length thread on those so it might not be good to try to pull on an inserted tap with the chip reliefs.  Might not be enough engagement for any real load and you really want to salvage that end, correct? 

And I see that you found a die while I was typing. :)

Non-planetary gearboxes I have worked with are also designed in stages which can be removed to decrease the gear ratio.  Just like with the planetary version, you shorten them. They are modular.

Excellent find, Tony!  I have looked for this many times in the past and never saw one come up.  Maybe screws and other parts in this size are becoming more common.

Same thread for motor attachment, yes. I found a new problem, used a gear puller to pop the pinion off of one of the 1024 gearbox/motor combos to put it on one of my 1019 motors....different motor shaft size. The 1219 and 1016's are smaller motor shaft. Will need to come up with a new gear or sleeve to make them work.

That makes sense.  I have put 8mm gearheads on 10mm motors in the past.  In a steam loco, a smaller gearhead can be really handy because the cab area is usually bigger than the firebox ahead of it, and being able to shove the gearhead into the firebox lets you use a longer motor.    Eldon used to swap pinions all the time.  He even used to DRILL PINIONS OUT to make them fit.   Wow... Imagine drilling out an 0.8mm hole in stainless steel.

Stumbled across a place in china making Faulhaber gearbox clones..... even 5.5mm thread to install the motor. Anybody want to get a quote? The site says min order one piece.

If they could make 4:1 ratio gearheads for around $35-40 bucks. I'd buy a few.

The specs on the 10mm single stage box are 10.1mm long,  5.1:1 ratio, 2mm output shaft.
