Unfortunately I don't think there is a glossary of all those Internet initialisms (I did not know that this was the name used for those, so I learned something new myself).
Kindly let me know meanings of abbreviations used regularly in this forum, such as LOL, ISO, etc.I see BTW = by the way, WTB = want to buy, but no idea for others.Thank you.Ryoichi
Others have been answered but ISO = In Search OffOf course don't forget the most important one. TRW!
But there are some unique acronyms used here, usually in the Crew Lounge section. Those are often referring to some local places in USA (like DELMARVA).
This is probably more than you want to know or care about, so feel free to skip the post. I can get boring with my detail sometimes, but you aren't a captive audience. I'll post for those who GAD (Give a Darn), and no hard feelings for anyone who wants to read something more interesting!Somewhere in the foggy past i was taught that a pronounceable abbreviation is an acronym. In the old Air Force, SAC, TAC and MAC were acronyms, but ATC (Air Training Command) was not, it was an initialism. St or Ave or Blvd is an abbreviation. An abbreviation made up of the first letters of the indicated words is an initialism, like NCO, or PVC for PolyVinylChloride or IPA for IsoPropyl Alcohol.he Navy is prone to use DelMarVa style shortened compounds, like NAVSCOLEOD for the Naval School for Explosive Ordnance Disposal or COMSUBPAC for Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Do you consider these to be acronyms? They are abbreviations, although they could easily be shorter than they are, and they are pronounceable.I learned something here, thanks to DKS. I had never heard of a toponym. Nor would I have expected to learn it here.End of spiel. As you were.
Um... not to pick nits, but DELMARVA is not an acronym, nor is it unique to the Crew Lounge. It's a "clipped compound" (toponym) of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delmarva_Peninsula
