First thing I do is to cut those plastic rings from my bits (as you can see by the earlier photo).  I find them awkward and useless.

 I'm also surprised that you have hard time using them in pin vises.  All my pin vises have 1/8" collet and readily accept the 1/8" shanks.  Make sure that the nut that tightens the collet is loose to allow the collet to fully open.

Good idea on the plastic collars...  Not all of my pin vises have a collet that opens to 3mm-1/8".  Of the few that do, the collet is pretty crappy and they won't fit, even with the nut fully loose.  I was able to de-burr the collet enough on the few that do work for 3mm, so I just use those. 

The awkwardness stems from using a long heavy pin vise with a 0.2mm or 0.25mm drill...  A quick shift or slip of the pin vise in hand, and the drill is broken. 

I will give cutting the plastic collar off them a shot...  I think that's the way to go!
