my needs is for a bunch of company houses that would represent the early to mid decades of the 20th century
in anthracite coal mining region. these were the simple houses with a still more simple front porch. they usually
were covered in shingles or painted wood, both looking old, grimy, and cheap.


if there is any possibility of providing a plan for scratch build it would be appreciated.

Hey Gary.  This is a company house remodel, but you can't tell the difference. This should work for your era. If 45° angle on edges is too difficult, you can make them butt joints. Dirty it up as needed.

It's too bad that Jim Coshun's health deteriorated so quickly.  He was working on N scale company houses when he went down hill.  I think some were cut, packed and shipped, but not many.  Here was a test build Jim had done.

Modeling the midwest, two structures I have scratch built that are really common there are B&O basic Depot (with the office bump-out) and two-story false-front wooden stores, with a gable roof behind. Pic is an Old West version, but common in midwest small towns, too.

There's a bunch of the smaller Craftsman houses I would like to see.  These include the Vallonia, Bandon, Avalon, Ashland, Irving, Argyle, Walton, Westly, Brookside, Sherbourne, Kilbourne, Sunbeam, and two I have only seen named as Modern Home 147 and 264B206.  I'd like to build a varied but modest residential neighborhood. A hip roofed combination passenger/freight station would be nice, something akin to what the SOO Line used.

That is a photo of an actual structure? It looks like a painting. Weird colors and textures.

That to me looks more like a wooden structure with siding that looks like shingles on the lower left, and imitation brick siding on the rest of the facade.

I think some of you may have missed my "Sears kit homes" (84 to 94 or "Cedars to Gateshead") which cover 10 of the many Sears homes from 1915 - 1932. Sears made 65 of these kit homes in that time frame, which is a prime slice of railroad history. Unfortunately I only did 10 of them.

Pete...yes, only had a lousy shot on a lousy for photography day. did not plan the journey or the shoot but finding myself there i knew where to find some old deteriorating company houses.

what drew me  to this one was at least 3 variety of front wall shingles, some wood, some asphalt, and some non-determined kind ... and the various shades of green which probably note the time frame when those different shingles got installed. likewise, the wooden framed door and windows were quite lacking in paint and had mostly cracked paint where it was still present. locking it in for a photo was the holes in the roof.

by the looks of the yard, it is still occupied and with children. not that uncommon given the region and its continuing to nose dive economy.

i think one of the saddest parts of these homes are the fact that one cannot finance repairs or upkeep in terms of a 1st or 2nd mortgage because they all sit on leased land that is still owned by the large coal/mining industries. Jeddo-Highland is one that was notorious for this continuing to help keep people and families in poverty and sub-standard housing. it is sad.

when i picture in my head the sights along a RR in such an area it would be several houses like this as they were built near the RRs.
