I learned something today...

These 'Day Out with Thomas' Thomas(s) are self propelled?  Or at least one is...

I've always seen them with some form of locomotive at the opposite end and I assumed they were basically cab cars for push pull service.

But watching Strasburg cam, there is a little blue 0-6-0 moving coaches around seemingly without a locomotive.

Never knew.. ~Ian

Only the one that remains at Strasburg is self-powered.  It was built from a former Brooklyn East District Terminal 0-6-0.  It doesn't leave the property.

A number of other Thomas replicas were built by the Strasburg (including a 3-foot narrow gauge one) to travel to other railroads, but none of them are powered.  They have steam and smoke effects, but Hollywood style.

The one that used to “run” at the Thomas weekend at the Illinois Railway Museum always had a handful of Rock Island commuter coaches and an SP SD-9 at the other end to push it out and pull it back.

That is the kind of stuff I always saw, I know Brittan has one (several?) 'real' Thomas Locomotives, and Japan had a Japanese 0-6-2 tank loco painted like Thomas with a face, I didn't realize we had one in the US.

Apparently, Strasburg has put a Mavis face on the SW1200 too :)  clever...

Cool.. ~Ian

Common practice for UK Day Out With Thomas events is to paint an 0-6-0T that the railway owns as Thomas for the event, and put a face on it, as well as putting a face on every other loco and piece of rolling stock the railway owns (within reason), such as what Strasburg does with the SW1200.

In Japan, the Oigawa Railway has a C11 2-6-4T painted as Thomas, with the three driving wheels painted blue for emphasis. I do not have a photo of that C11, but have an in-service JNR one in N Scale:

In addition, the Oigawa Railway has a C56 class 2-6-0 painted as James. I also do not have an image of that loco, but have an in-service JNR model in N:
