So that we don't get into another "icebreaker" errr...."conversation", can anyone supply info on the Southern and SP "boxcar/hopper" cars?  The description supplied by MT begins "In the early twentieth century there was an increasing need to transport dry goods in bulk by rail."  But these are clearly 1950s or later.  In fact, shop dates on the SP car are 1953 and on the Southern car 1968.  I am aware of "drop bottom" boxcars and stockcars going back to the late 19th or early 20th century, but these are clearly not those.  Appear to be a MTL "standard" PS-1 boxcar modified with hopper bays and hatches.  For my own modeling purposes, I could use the SP car if the 1953 date is accurate.  The 1942 build date on the car would indicate that the PS-1 is "standing in" for a 1937 or 1937 modified boxcar.  But I might let that slide just to have the conversation piece sitting on a siding near a grain elevator among a bunch of boxcars and a couple covered hoppers (my planned layout is 1956 when most grain was still moving in boxcars).

It'll leave a tail of dust and debris behind it in every train it's in. :)

Actually kinda cool offering, though I cannot make up my mind about the rest of that series.

The monthly offerings have been less impressive to me of late, so I eagerly await the weathered offerings every month now.

Trying to remember exactly how many TBOX 3 packs I pre ordered.  :scared:

The NS flats (which would have made sense as pre-weathered) and hoppers (which are stand-ins) look interesting...

:)  I need the Santa Fe caboose.  Right now, I still use an old Model Power train set crap one since it looks better than my two Santa Fe Kato shorty cabeese.

The SP car appears to be reasonably accurate. It represents a very small class of just two cars. Later conversions eliminated the doors. Time frame is accurate however these and the later conversions were dedicated to bulk sugar service.

Thanks for the info.  "dedicated to bulk sugar service"- there could be a cookie factory in the layout's future....

SOU 26950-99 had roof hatches but not outlets.

The S L G  & W( Salt Lake Garfield and Western) "Salt Air" tank car was one of a handful of Tank cars purchased second hand and reconditioned not to haul fuel oil, but to transport Fresh Water out to the Salt Air Resort located on the South Shore of the Great Salt Lake, which did not have access to fresh water. The interurban ran out to the lake from North Temple in Salt Lake ,it also served the Morton Salt Plant located about mid way on the route, and with a branch to the Garfield Smelter. The company is still in business with diesels, and does not go all the way to the lake, but into the International Center, a large shipping are warehousing facility next to the Salt Lake International Airport. 28000 series as D&H cement car would be another option, but it would need different hatches and outlets:

I can't find an online picture of the prototype, Tichy Train Group HO model is the closest thing I could find:
