Just wondering if you were able to try the esu extended cv procedure?
The cvs 96 97 99 are the registers just for accessing cvs above 256. They reset to zero once they are written to.
So to change f8:
Cv31=16
Cv32=2
Cv96=4
Cv97=03
Cv99=32

96 and 97 make cv403

CAUTION:

Be sure to program the CV's in order starting with 96 as the data will be automatically written to the CV's once the value in 99 is entered.

This procedure is ONLY needed when programming CV’s above 255 on a system that cannot access extended range CV's

Atlas and Intermountain have the same procedure for their esu decoders as well.

Thanks for the advice, appreciated, but at this point I’m a bit nervous about messing things up. I found someone with a Lokprogrammer nearby so that’s the route to go now....I hope...

Bump, how time flies...an update.
I finally had time to take my S2’s to a friend’s yesterday and he reprogrammed the sound-on default to sound-off using his Lokprogrammer using a single command. Slick, the whole exercise took about 5 minutes, including setup. While at it, he also downloaded recent firmware “updates” onto the decoders, whatever that did or does.
Back home on the layout, the engines are now quiet, behaving properly like the rest of my fleet, and don’t speak until spoken to.... all seems well :D
Thanks to all who provided advice here.
