I wish I could find my old Appalachian Trail Guidebook from the days when you were expected to ford or swim the Potomac at Weverton. That kind of made the through hikers schedule their arrivals there for late summer low-flow periods, or bum a ride across an auto bridge. Using the railroad bridge was a big deal when it became available. And an even bigger deal was the court decision that the new US I-70 highway must have a foot bridge for the Trail, rather than make hikers scamper across it like the old Rt.40.
