Dealing with Roadnumbers

I did this once with a string of 8 or so NYC Pacemaker freight cars.  I went with the approach of carefully scratching out one digit with an Xacto blade and putting in another from a decal sheet.  Microscale makes several NYC decal sheets, so I was able to find something very close in size and font.

I've got 29 otherwise identical MicroTrains NKP hoppers in 6 numbers.    I've considered renumbering 23 of them, but piecing together 5 digit car numbers from number jumbles 92 times isn't my idea of fun (4 numbers per car).  Plus I haven't yet found the right size numbers that matches what's on the car  The only "good" news is that these cars are old enough that there are no numbers or reporting marks printed on the car ends, so at least I don't need to remove or match them.    So for now, I'm leaving them alone.

On the other hand, I have 6 other MT notched-arch-end hoppers all numbered NKP 33799 that WILL get renumbered.  Luckily, K4s has a decal set for these, and it just happens to come with 6 numbers! This will get done by painting over the existing reporting marks and numbers, then applying the decals.  i did an experiment and it it works nicely.

This was many years ago, and I'm afraid I don't have a very good photo.   I bought up a bunch of the Atlas NYC Pacemaker cars, because the Microtrains ones were too expensive for me.  (You can see there is one MT car in the string, the one that is a darker red).  Then I changed out the trucks and couplers and fixed the egregious paint so that the door is all red instead of being split red/gray top/bottom.  Then I did the renumbering.  You can't see much from this photo, but these are the cars.  I saw a prototype photo of a Dreyfuss Hudson pulling a string of these Pacemaker cars and it was so striking I wanted a train like that.
