Bachmann Announces N NYC J3a Hudson

The August 2020 Model Railroader carries an ad on the back of the magazine announcing DCC Econami-equipped NYC J3a Hudsons in N Scale.   Road numbers 5404, 5420, 5426, and 5445.  Comes with operating front coupler with optional dummy in the down position.  Scheduled for Fall 2020 release.

Ahahahahah, the irony of all the Kato passenger car sets that are going to be running around pulled by Bachmann engines!

Wow, that's awesome!  Kudos to Bachmann for stepping up.  I wish Kato would make more steam locomotives, particularly USRA types that can be kitbashed.

Just like what they did with the PRR K4 a few years ago.  Right out of the blue with no announcements other than an ad in Model Railroader.  Not even listed in their most recent catalog a few months ago.

I still want them to do a C&O H8 Allegheny to go along with their H4/H5 2-6-6-2 Mallet and Kanawha.

Maybe I'll get lucky, Kato will issue a Grand Trunk/CN train in green and black, and Bachmann will make a U4b.  OK, probably too much to ask for, since total sales would be about 12 units.

Still, given the number of Kato ATSF passenger cars out there, if the theory holds, Bachmann needs to bring out a 3450 or 3460.

Will they be the streamline Dreyfus Hudsons in the gray livery, or just plain black unstreamlined locos?
I'm still hoping that Kato will eventually produce the NYC Dreyfus Hudson and a 1938 version of the 20th Cantury Ltd.

Ah, the old saying of “If you kit bash it, they will build it next year” applies to me here. With this release I’ll buy one (or two?) and save my concor for a conversion into a Nickel Plate Hudson with smoke deflectors. Any one have photos of this yet?

Crap. Now I need to buy a kato 20th century set.

The lack of a steam engine to pull it with was the only thing holding me back. Talk about pricey.

The car and loco (if the loco is in fact a Dreyfus Hudson), are from different eras with different liveries.  But like you, I'll still buy it.

I already have a very pricey loco which I hope will be able to pull the full-length train.  I had this model since they were originally released back in the '90s, but I didn't have enough funds back then to buy the matching brass train that was released at that time.

Start with a USRA Heavy Pacific rather than a NYC Hudson.   You need spoked drivers and the NKP 4-6-4 had smaller drivers than the NYC.

BTW this release from Bachman is conventional outline...not Dreyfus or ESE.....yet.

Yes I d like those, too. Let’s dream on...
But, what Bachmann REALLY NEEDS to do is to finally give up on their many-times-retooled 2900 class 4-8-4 pos and produce a new, 21st century version of it, perhaps timing it with the upcoming completion of the 2926 in Albuquerque. What a half-million pound show that will be....

Silly question, but was the NYC 20th Century set that Kato is doing ever pulled by steam?

I can only seem to find pics with EMD E7s.

I hear you Otto.
40-some years ago, a hobby shop owner actually talked me out of spending my money on one of those.  Still, to this day, every time I see one on sale at a reasonable price, I am tempted.  But I've waited over 40 years, so I guess I will keep waiting until a quality model comes along.

Not an expert, but looks like it's unlikely except in a emergency.  The Kato set is the new cars starting in 1948 so they were probably always EMD E7's.
