Question about CNJ Baldwin double-ender livery
« on: June 29, 2020, 08:55:42 PM »

I'm having trouble finding pictures of the CNJ Baldwin double-enders in the tangerine/blue livery that will answer my question, which is this: Were the trucks and fuel tank painted blue or black? A follow-up would be, did it depend on the road number? Of the six CNJ had, no. 2000-2002 had portholes and additional red lining, while 2003-2005 did not have portholes or red lining.

looks blue here:

but here it looks black:

(but then it is a drawing rather than a photo)

you might want to go with a dark blue that could like somewhat like either?

that's all i can find online

sincerely

I know some are black and white, but perhaps they can still help with details.

It looks to me like the double-ended Babyfaces at least started off with blue underframes. It's a bit tough to tell on later photos of the orange/blue units if the underframes were repainted black or not under all that dirt, but I don't think anyone but the most hardcore CNJ fan would mind if I painted a model of these with a blue underframe.

Thank you all for the photos.

Sharky,

That first photo sure looks blue. Hard to argue with that kind of evidence.  :D

Except everything other than the orange parts and the men’s faces look kind of blue...

I'm suspicious of that first photo, which is from Wikimedia. It has a few tint artifacts - the faces, particularly - that make me think it's been artificially colored. David's photo of #2000 is the best color reference of the bunch, with the other color shots suffering from hue shifts due to age.

You have a point. :D

On this photo, the trucks and fuel tanks etc appear to be the same color as the lower part of the carbody (whatever color that is):

Well you know Grimy Black has a heavy blue tint to it. Just use Grimy Black. Or mix navy blue and dark brown for your own grimy black.

I agree that this photo seems to be severely color shifted towards blue.

I corrected the colors, but now the yellow seems quite intense. And the faces also look way to bold. Maybe this is a colorized photo that ended up being blue-shifted too?

The "yellow" is supposed to be tangerine/orange.

This ought to provide a reasonably accurate representation of the tangerine and blue. Note that the Fs all appear to have black trucks and fuel tanks, FWIW.

What did you use as a reference for color-correction? Because the sky turned yellow, too...

I took a crack at it and here's what I got...

Based on what I had to do, I suspect this was probably colorized and then digitally manipulated.
