Can somehow, this whole thing be a banner image?
Yeah, "Best Of Rants".
It's C55 rail, I know it by sight.
We can all thank the nut environmentalists for the battery thing.Back when I worked in the hearing aid industry, there were mercury and silver batteries to power them. The mercury batteries, in themselves, were good enough but the silver batteries would last almost indefinitely in a hearing aid. Then they outlawed both types and replaced them with air cells which are comparatively crap even though they were extolled as the greatest thing since ears. One tip, replace the stick-on cover over the air holes when the battery is not in use. It will greatly extend its life.Doug
After reading through this thread I asked myself "can I add value to this discussion in some way?" You'll be happy to know that I concluded that no...no I can't.
I did simply post the link as a snarky reply, but I do love my 30+ year old Mitutoyo dial calipers... Pleasure to use and I can trust them to be consistant and accurate...
Well, now you've done it. I have used an inexpensive dial caliper for years (made in China), and it seems pretty accurate, measures to .001", and always returns to zero. But since you pointed up the snazzy Mitutoyo, I sniffed around. Turns out that you can find those and nice older 100% US made Starrett calipers for under $100. New ones are $135+ at best, and the Starrett are no longer US made. The Mitutoya is and always was made in Japan. So anyway, I scored one of the American-made Starrett models for $65. Looks clean and spotless in the eBay ad. We'll see (ha ha ha). Now I'm about to find out if it is in any way better than the $20 pair I have from China.
The Railwire is not your personal army.
That brought a smile to my face I've never had my hands on a Starrett set so I'm not sure how it will measure up, but based on their other precision measuring tools you should be happy...This seems like a good spot to put some AVE. />
