I started making progress again. I built a styrene version of the White Pine copper refinery. I still have to weather and detail it. I brought the layout to a train show last weekend and let people run on it. Everything worked well.

Wow… not much for updates in a while… I need to get back working on the layout!
I did get some lighting going since the last update. I’ll be adding more soon.

I hosted about a dozen ops sessions over the last 12 months. The layout needs a good cleaning now so I can get more operators over soon.

Per the prototype, I have a slope running up to one of my copper refinery doors. I added a tortoise mounted sideways to actuate a pin that holds cars by the axle so they don’t roll down. Special instructions remind you to release the hand brake before pulling cars. I may add this on more sidings. It’s kinda fun!

Very cool Karl, this is a great project and I really like that pin idea. I’ve seen that suggested for some coal layouts too, to hold cars on a tipple slope. Do you have any photos of how you have it mounted or any other details on how it works?

The spot this one ended up made the bracket easy, otherwise I would have have to build a more complicated L to hold the tortoise.

I ran the wire through an aluminum tube, so the wire could drop below the roadbed. I cut the wire so it holds the axle of the freight cars when in the raised position.

I decided it build an interior for the dock that loads out the scrap copper.

I did something very similar to hold cars on the main and passing siding, both on a 2% grade. Unfortunately, horizontal Tortoise mounting wouldn't work so had to resort to a more complicated linkage arrangement. It works well. Even has fusee protection at each end.

The new Athearn tank cars fit my copper refinery perfectly, so I got 1/2 dozen of them weathered and added to the switch list!

Great question! I wish Shapeways was still running. I’d love to model the S12 for the layout. I may try chopping down a VO-1000 shell to see if I can do it
