Not much for me this week. I did a silly animation of a barber chair--

and I shuffled some buildings around on the layout. All the details are here: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=49183.msg665917#msg665917

Great job Dave...love those Southern 38's ... a pair used to pass by my house twice a day running out to meet the B & O at Strasburg, VA in the 80's.

Jeff

My ‘ronaproject is fully functional and close to completion.  Just finish the ballast on the track under it, get some scenery roughed in behind it, and add a little kudzu to it, and the trestle will be ready for permanent installation:

Dave,   who makes that PC gon?

Tangent Scale Models.  It’s an HO scale Penn Central Class G43C 52’ gondola.

While not 100 prototypical, Trainworx released a similar N scale model painted for PC:

They produced 12 road numbers, four remain in stock.

A few weeks ago, I ordered a handful of HO scale vehicles to start populating the streets on my layout.  Most of the vehicles that I bought are highly detailed and not too ridiculously priced, considering the quality.  One exception was a Trident Miniatures Chevrolet truck, which I got because I’m having trouble finding vehicles for my mid-1980s era that are not hot rods or luxury imports.  I model North Carolina, so I need mostly ordinary domestic models.

Anyhow, this Chevy truck was advertised as blue and showed chrome parts in the online photo.  I figured it would make a good background vehicle, until I received this unpainted, raw plastic truck with no chrome.  I was able to disassemble it without causing damage, and you can see what a turd this model is:

So, I grabbed a can of Dupli-Color plastic adhesion primer and some spray bombs of paint.  I tried to use model paint that reasonably matched the color chips from 1980s Chevy/GMC trucks.  I quickly discovered that my old cans of red and yellow were bad.  Then, my first attempt with orange led to a trip into a 91% isopropyl alcohol bath, because it wouldn’t cover and had to go on way too thick.  Regrouping my efforts, I found a can of Model Master Bright White that had never been used and sprayed okay.  I also used Testors Silver Metallic for the chrome parts.  The result:

Much better, but still a background model when other cars from Brekina, Oxford Diecast, and others look like this:

At least it turned out that I didn’t waste $12.00 on that crap, after investing a few hours of labor and some paint. :)

I managed to get into a few things this week including some decals on some BCR models I painted a couple of years ago.

Couple more knocked out.  New glue works great, gives some time to set your folds correctly and more importantly it sticks and doesn't bleed thru the paper.

Dave, super transformation of that truck. The paint takes care of any concerns.
Nice work!

Dave, seems you made a silk purse out of a sows ear.   It’s the same colors and looks just like the one, one of my neighbors has although without the large dent in the left fender.

I spent some relaxing evenings last week evaluating and test running my loco collection that has been mostly confined to storage since moving while the new layout is under construction. Considering the age of much the collection (really old) and my planned conversion to DCC, a good portion was deemed expendable. This included 5 very old Kato F7B’s, 3 FP7’s built with kitbashed shells on stretched Kato F unit chassis, a pair of ‘lead sled’ Life Like C Liners, and an old model Atlas RS 11 that had been ‘Canadianized’ but didn’t run very well. They all run, most of them quite well, but they are never going to run on the new layout I don’t want to be constantly unconsciously wasting brain energy on planning their resurrection, so they had to go. These were boxed up and talked to the LHS for future considerations. I don’t really care if I get anything for them and I told the proprietor that he could ‘gift’ them to any young modellers that he feels are deserving if he didn’t feel there is any value in any or all of them. I just wanted that out of the house.

This was balanced with a ‘fleet renewal program’. I have a recently repainted and detailed Kato F7B shell that needed a chassis, and one of the old kitbashed FP7’s has a shell that is substantially better than the others and deserved a second life with another new chassis. I wanted to try using a Kato FP7 chassis but there was no guarantee that it would fit satisfactorily. The LHS allowed me to ‘borrow’ an A-B set of Milwaukee units (decoder equipped) for a test fit (illustrating the value of bricks and mortar over on-line AFAIC). Other than a little monkeying with the front coupler it fit like a glove.  :) The down side is that I was left staring at a perfectly good Kato FP7 shell wondering what it would take to redetail it to a CP unit. This turns out to be pretty straightforward, with a new winter hatch, filling in the second headlight, adding dynamic brakes, a bunch of new details (additional handrails and replacement of of the cast on ones, windshield wipers, lift rings, and icicle breakers); the most difficult part seems to be converting the passenger pilots to a freight pilot. So it was back to the hobby shop to pay for the borrowed set and pick up another FP to provide another chassis for the upgraded shell from the first one.

The problem becomes the following: I have begun a chain in which there will always be another Milwaukee FP shell left over, which will almost certainly end up being redetailed to a CP unit, which will require another chassis, which will result in another shell...

Local hobby shop owner is smiling.
