I used the same Woodland Scenics Gray Blend I'd used for the rest of the JD.  At best you can very carefully get a single layer in between the ties but TBH you'll see in between the pieces if you do that.  I had painted the rails with a Floquil rail paint pen and painted the ties by hand with a brush using Poly Scale Railroad Tie Brown. 

That said, you'll see that--as is always the case--a little weathering covers all sins.  Weathering between the rails blends it all together.

Painting the concrete ties is no big deal with a microbrush; using the double track also allows you to only have to ballast the two outside edges...

@arbomambo do you use the one with the bristles or one of the regular round ones?

Dude your TTrak stuff is pretty amazing. Got any tips for me?

When I hide my Unitrack I just paint the whole damn thing. Then I let the ballast fill in where the ballast belongs. On MG, I'd say to use a general dark brown-gray. If some of the underlying paint shows through between the rails (where it's most likely to), it's fine because it'll look like the oil/grease stains down the middle of the real track.

 I have seen the track that Ed ballasted and it does look great.

This is SO TRUE. I had what was possibly my happiest model railroading afternoon clicking together TTRAK modules and throwing track down on the empty frames.

It wasn't GOOD modeling, but it sure was fun. And I think it's really important to keep a good balance.

In this case, I think Josh is hitting a really great balance. I have no doubt it's all going to be done to the highest quality and since they'll be modules, we'll hopefully be able to see them without having to brave his sticky dungeon basement.
