Those look well designed. I see Gremlins and Pacers!  :D

Actually an amazing variety of makes and models. If only the Shapeways prints impressed me.  :|

I have tons of his models and they are really good. Yeah, FUD is FUD, but with Bestine, sandable primer and patience they can look very good.

Is it me, or has Shapeways pricing gone up faster than their quality? For that kind of money, the prints should be darned close to perfect. Are they? I’d sure like to see some of the finished models.
The variety is amazing though!

Think the prices went up twice since the last time I ordered from them. The started up with investment money and now they need to make a profit.

Honestly, they need to have an option to sell the digital file for those with their own printers too. I would get a photon as well as buy files if they were available.

Otto:  That is my impression as well.  The SeaLand containers I bought a while back are very well designed, and as close to perfectly scaled as I can measure.  But the Shapeways prints took a LOT of cleanup, and I never did get them truly smooth, even though it's all flat surfaces.

Frankly, after seeing the "layering" lines, I was thinking that they'd be a good source for N scale small-lumber loads.  The "artifacts" would be perfect for the sides of a not-quite-perfect stack of 1x lumber, without the usual "board gaps".

I'd like to see that happen as well, but it's unlikely. It's an intellectual property quagmire - how do you enforce "you're entitled to print one usable copy"? Then define "print". Define "usable".

I think the real solution is for Shapeways to buy and manage a phalanx of Photons as an output option. That way you get access to the artwork collection, fairly compensate each creator for his/her work, and get the advantages of the low-cost, high-resolution PLA/resin process.

Jens is doing a great job on his models. He is also offering “strings” of cars to load auto racks

Cheers
