Small portable spray booth?

I feel like, for the type of one off work we typically do something like this might be useful in place of a large dedicated rig.

Looks like a repurposed children's play tent honestly. Wonder how effective it is withought an active component for airflow and filtering.

Yeah where is the fan and tubing that runs outside? Might as well just spray into a garbage can.

Without knowing the materials that tent is made of, I wonder what happens with the overspray.   Does it stick to the material and dry?  When the tent is then rolled/folder/bent for storage, does the dried paint start to flake off?  If so, is that a problem later, when bits of paint are falling off while you are using it to paint another model, so that they can stick in the wet paint?  If it doesn't flake off, wouldn't the cloth eventually become almost rigid due to paint build-up?

That's what I have. Works reasonably well for acrylics and water based paints but its not quite strong enough to clear all the fumes from the solvent based paints unless you run it a long time after you are done.

It all depends what you spray- if water based or water borne (and not all acrylics are water based or water borne) you need some exhaust for airflow purposes, and enough filtering so that the exhaust fan does not get clogged up over time with paint, and so that you don't have paint droplets floating around the room.  Or turning your snot into various colors.  Not to mention the particulate that goes into making for eggshell or flat finishes (some of which are not dissimilar from finely ground glass).  At any rate, you don't want that stuff in your lungs/nose/sinuses.  So, even water based paints are not necessarily completely safe.

On the one with a fan, do note from the description at the bottom of the page (scroll down past the "fan mail" telling you how great it is)
"Not intended for use with Hazardous Materials, Flammable or Explosive Paints or Materials"

Which means they are worried about it throwing off a spark into solvent or lacquer fumes.

Which makes it kind of questionable whether it meets the definition of "paint spray booth".

I use a large cardboard box, it also folds flat for storage.  😊

Depends on your control, how close to the model you are, and probably something else. You ALWAYS have overspray though, even if it's particles bouncing off the model.

I mean, maybe, but when I spray I'm not going crazy. There's a bit, yes, but it's not like I'm spraying a life size locomotive.

Ed, not trying to be cheeky, but have you ever airbrushed or even spray painted before? There will *ALWAYS* be overspray (atomized paint particles), and fumes (solvents) in the air.  Unless you suck that stuff out, it will linger.  Even spraying something as small as an N scale figure or vehicle.

If all you want is to contain the overspray, then just find yourself a large cardboard box. No need to buy a fancy tent with no exhaust capability.
