Southern Rwy SD24 suggestions
« on: December 01, 2019, 09:39:56 PM »

I want to add 1-2 Southern Rwy SD24's to my loco roster as the Milwaukee Road leased a number of them between '76 thru '79 due to deferred maintenance and the effects of several bad winters on their own fleet. I have not been able to acquire an Atlas Southern SD 24, but have cobbled the undec parts to make one, LESS THE BELL.
Atlas has none at the moment, and does not anticipate getting any for a while, any recommendations for this item?
Paint suggestions, Black with some grey/black added???
Thanx in advance,
Rick

Nice... A pair of Southern SD24s is on my wishlist for the same reason, they were staples on Milwaukee and the Soo...

For a bell Miniatures by Eric NB-13 should be close.

The following dealer shows the Southern Rwy Atlas SD24 locos in stock in two different road numbers.
Where it says "Select type", use the drop-down menu to see the available Southern units.

Thanx for the suggestion of TopHobby, had not heard of them before. I had located 2 diff road #'s at WigWag, but only with decoders, and I wanted to use LokPilots.
I had looked at Miniatures by Eric website already, as I have purchased from them before, but was not sure if that item was appropriate for SRR. I had also considered contacting Intermountain to see if they had any available since they did a high hood SD40-2.
Jerry Pyfers book shows these units running on the Racine and Southwestern line which I live very close to. The idea of unit coal trains coming thru here is kinda scary, as about 20 years ago, track speed was 10mph max for the WSOR on what is left up to end of track in Elkhorn about 10 miles east of here. State helped subsidize a rehab and it is now 25mph or so.
So, as far as the color goes.....black with some weathered black added? does not look very glossy and the decal sheet does not really help, although it might be there as the thing is sensory overload!

I think there's a part for them on Shapeways. I can't find it at the moment, but I think it's there.

PNC SD18 rebuilt from ex-Southern SD24

The Milwaukee could rebuild them for others, while at the same time they had trouble keeping their own motive power moving under their own power!

What's on top of the cab roof?   Is that some kind of shield over the horns?  Maybe so Kudzu didn't grow in them?

That's a window pane on the background building, which happens to be lined up with the horns in this particular photo.  MH

The Milwaukee shops was famous for their quality of work and even into the 1970s was busy with contract work...

Unfortunately management refused to spend on anything that didn't help their merger prospects...

Dupont rebuilds were pretty common, when Soo bought Milwaukee they found a number of locomotives with cracked frames covered in fresh paint!

It's not that they couldn't, they weren't allowed to!

I think you're seeing a dirty glass window in that building behind the locomotive.
