CMR Products locomotive shells

Has anyone had any experience using the CMR Products locomotive shells for any builds? I've heard that they may not be that great as far as correct details and such and wondering if I would be better off printing my own using an SLA printer. I am an engineer with fairly decent parametric modeling skills, so 3d modeling my own wouldn't be that terrible, just time consuming. But, if their shells are decent, then I might just get one then. The shell I'm interested in is their SD60E shell and a SD70ACU shell that they produced a while back.

Are you aware the Atlas is making the SD60E?

Yup. I've tried contacting them about undecorated shells for their new SD60E's a few days ago, but I have yet to hear from them yet. But then again, it's only been a couple of days yet. I'm trying to flush out some options just in case they don't offer them separately from their locomotives.

I picked up an example of their WM Chopnose GP9 to play with.  (for $25 quid, that's a pretty expensive toy).  Overall the lines look good, but I'm a little concerned about the thin material that makes the roof...  It will be hard to keep light from bleeding through that even with paint.

Also, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do for handrails.

It would have made more sense, in my estimation, to just do a shell that can swap onto an Atlas sill with handrails, but I suppose there's some sort of legal mumbo jumbo that would land all of us in jail, when all we wanted to do is run a local to Hanover.

It might help to paint the inside of the shell black.

If you really need to block light, try metallic tape.

Lee, I can put brass wire handrails on any of those shells post-paint.

And for trivia:  The chop-nose GP that is currently stored on the Georges Creek storage track at Luke (Althizer's) is ex-WM, and Sloan Cornell had it up here for years.  That was known as the "System Engine" as all he did was spray-paint out "Chessie".  Then it was finally repainted into the gray, red and blue of the Knox & Kane, then was in the enginehouse fire.   So I 've got my own photo collection of those handrails allthough I never saw it pre-Chessie.

Thanks for the offer on the handrails.  I might take you up on that.
I've sold my original 39, the one I did with my brass cab front, so I'm looking to put a new one back on the rails.
I've known Gerald for a number of years, and was aware of its comings and goings.  I was amazed he was able to resurrect it to running order after the fire.  I believe it's stored in mechanically sound order, and he's just waiting to pull the funds together to paint it in its WM heraldry.
Sadly, with the closure of the mill, his revenue stream has been dammed up a bit.

A friend of mine asked me to paint a CMR SD60E for him. After looking at the shell, I told him no. "Rough" would be putting it mildly.

The Atlas SD60E's aren't out, yet, so you'll have to wait for shells until they are. Once they start shipping, I would expect undec shells and shell assemblies to be available shortly thereafter.
