Just curious, but why do you want to add traction tires?  First, it does nothing to help with electrical continuity from the rails, and, second, what’s the plan when the traction tires become brittle and you can’t find replacements?  My solution is to do as the prototype would and just add another locomotive.

I’m modelling a train that has a specific number of cars pulled by a specific diesel. Don’t want to add another loco so I’m exploring options.

Gotcha.  I hope it still runs okay when you’re finished.  I had to remove the traction-tired axle from my BLI E6 to improve electrical continuity.  It didn’t run well until that was addressed.  Good luck!
