Did I hit a respect point limit?
« on: June 29, 2019, 12:20:40 AM »
I’m noticing an odd phenomenon...  I have 17 respect points on my post in last week’s Weekend Update thread.  Yet on the front page, the “Messages of the Week” section shows that post as having only +9, and it decreased by one from 10 after my post upvotes on this week’s Weekend Update thread went up by one...  What gives?  To be clear, the post itself still shows +17...it’s the front page that shows the decreasing number of respect points.  I’m guessing by the time anyone sees this it’ll have fallen off the front page entirely.

Just in reading it, it would seem that being 'post of the week', maybe the respect points stop counting towards the total after a week from when they were given.  :?

If so, you'd expect them to keep falling to zero.

edit: you should watch to see if marc dance's thread loses it's points (+10 now) sometime this weekend..

As long as we don't have any gratuitous down-votes, I'm not worried.  I never make the Message of Week list - I don't own a layout, and my posts which gain respect points are too technical for most of the generous up-voters.   :)   But that doesn't bother me. I just do my thing without worrying about all those lurking Peteski-haters out there.

Jason is right: that tally only counts votes cast within the past week and lists the top current vote-getters, regardless of how old the post is.  It's pretty common for last week's WU posts to fall off the list as their votes age.

I understand them falling off the list due to age… But this is the first time I’ve actually seen upvotes being subtracted.

I checked the settings -- nothing seems abnormal ..

As you noticed, they are not subtracted from the actual post (or from your respect count). But I suspect that the Messages of the Week are likely calculated using upvotes cast within a moving windows of 7 days. As the post ages, members are no longer up-voting the post as frequently as when it was new; the number of respect points for those posts will show decreasing number of points cast within that 7-day window, causing the post to move down the list, and eventually fade away from the list.
