More old toys arrived in the mailbox today...

So I played with them.  And it was good.

I'm very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing...but I'd be hard pressed to imagine a more magnificent resting place.

At long last finished a project: modifying the Nelson switchers to more closely resemble the CPR's S4s.  This meant watchman heaters on the Engineer's side (done a year or so ago), adding AAR trucks from Jeff Briggs and rerailers, and weathering.

Also pushed forward with the scenery for the retaining wall behind the yard.

Running the cabling for LED lighting for the station stops at Shields and Farron

And prepping the laser cut parts for the buildings I would like to assemble at the cottage this summer.

Have a great weekend!

Combining lessons learned from last week, I decided to attack the MBB MBTA coaches from a different angle.

Full size car

Layer 1 will be the end doors and window glass to the car side.

Car sides cut down to exclude doors.

Car sides tested on clear base.

Middle strip of car masked for paint. Door windows masked for paint. The interior of the clear plastic is also masked.

Ends are angled like the prototype. I used strip styrene as a scaffolding then Milliput to fill in the angled areas. This still needs a lot of finishing.

What's the story behind the watchman heaters?

From Mike Barone, a friend who worked in the Nelson shops as a teen:

"the Watchman heater was run on diesel and was to keep the oil warm when the engine was shut down overnight during prairie winters. I believe it was added to the Nelson engines as they were initially assigned to  to such overnight runs as Kaslo and Slocan sub."

No, some of us work night shift, and our entire lives are shifted to that type of existence. If I have trouble sleeping, it is during the day. :)
