Please help me find these box car ends and door

Hello all.

I'm planning a model of this car and I think the Intermountain AAR 1937 40ft box is my best bet as a base, although if anyone has a better starting point I'm all ears.

I need an 8 ft door and, but only on one side (the other side is plated), and I don't know how to describe the ends but they are different than the ones that come with the IM car.

Can anyone help me source these parts?

Thanks, Craig

edit: I should add this is a 40ft ft NSC car with 10' inside height

NSC-2 ends.   Intermountain announced them, but I have yet to see them.

Oh excellent. I don’t mind leaving them with the inaccurate stock ends if they will eventually materialize.

I’ve learned that Microtrains makes an 8’ Youngstown door so perhaps this is the solution. Although they sell them in a twelve pack.... as I need one. Haha.

Thanks for the reply.

NSC-2 ends.   Intermountain announced them, but I have yet to see them.

Unfortunately, IM also cancelled them (see https://intermountain-railway.com/ncancelled.html)

I reckon these ends are good candidates for 3D printing and recently suggested to Jeff Briggs that he look at the list of 40' boxcar components - including NSC-2 ends -  that Tim Horton put together in his thread on superior panel doors: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=46594.30

Excellent. I’ll show my interest in that thread.

Yep, these cars have that end ("NSC-2") which is unique to National Steel Car, standard rectangular panel roofs, and originally 6' Youngstown doors. This particular car is part of a series that was rebuilt with 8' doors for newsprint service. (Note the 8' is a Youngstown door for a 10'6" IH box, with the lower door track mounted lower down and the side sill reinforced below the enlarged door opening.) Then this car was rebuilt again for express/baggage service on the passenger train with HEP electrical connections, end doors and the main door on the other side plated over as mentioned. (It shuttles between two points and doesn't get turned, so it only needs the door on the one side as the platforms are on that side at both ends of the run.)

Other side of same car:

Chris thank you so much for the detail. I was wondering about the roof. Looks like I need to get a Des Plains Hobbies flat roof.

I also didn’t notice that it has a 10’6” door. I did see the reinforced sill but was sure why.

Actually, looking at this more closely, I don't believe the door on this one is a 10'6". The 9' doors on the 92000 series definitely were though.

Original 6' door car (90xxx series):

8' door conversion (910xx series)

9' door conversion (920xx series)

Note how much lower the door track is on the last car.

I did a conversion of one of these in HO scale using the True Line NSC boxcar and a 9' door from the scrap box.

Thanks for the lesson on the doors. I see what you mean and I would agree that it’s probably a 10’ door. Good! That’s easy to get  in N scale.

Any idea where to get decals for the later box cars?
