Mark5:  Thank you! At least I know I can buy the K-Line, probably the OOCL, and not the Mitsui.

For those of us modeling the 70s, when containers usually didn't come in solid trains, it would be nice of Athearn had mixed 3-packs.  Even if there was one in  the package that was too modern, it would be cheaper than buying 3-packs of each scheme we could use, when we only need one container of a kind.

Since I'm going to have extras, and MicroScale makes decals for a few early containers, it looks like I'll be painting some.  Does anyone have any information on "PCL"?  MSD 60-298 had them, with their odd initials on a blue rectangle logo, but I don't remember ever seeing a picture of one.  I do remember seeing them in the 1970s.

With all these containers coming out. It would be a good time to do the chassis's again and some new ones.

Here's a link to the Springfield show report from Model Railroad Hobbyist and pre-production 40' chassis photo, from JTC Models;

Matts-Place lists it as "Phoenix Container Liners" and lists them as an 80s era Ocean Carrier, before being acquired by K-Line.

Here's an '85 shot from that page:

And Matt's FAQ page on liveries is pretty helpful in these situations.

Mark5:  Thank you again!  That's exactly what I remembered, and it looks like basically the same container as the new Athearns.  And, dated 1973, it fits my era perfectly, especially since James' post has a seemingly identical box in 1985.

James:  The container in that '85 shot looks like it might have been around since the early 70s.

I have some other PCL pics from the 70s, but that is the earliest dated photo.

Matt's container site is weak in that most photos do not have a date (unfortunately).

This one appears to be a hi-cube.

It does, but that wasn't the question or answer.

Sorry, not meant as a slight. The context is 40' sheet post, and I just realized that 1985 PCL pic was a hi-cube. So, if looking for the 70s - I don't think that particular container was around much in the 70s.

(I can't seem to pin down exactly when the hi-cubes 1st became common).

The PCL photo I posted is from '73, and not a high cube.

Hope this makes it clear. :D

James and Mark5:  It does answer another (unasked) question:  Did the company survive past the mid 70s?  If they were independent long enough to buy high cube containers, then I know they weren't bought out before then, and I can justify them on my railroad.

In any case, I can put my decals on an Athearn box, when they arrive, and be reasonably sure they fit my era.

This is fantastic news! (I only have a few of the DI kits laying around).

@Mark5 @nkalanaga

Photo is undated, but the freshly painted yellow TT F89F (the Athearn model) gives some clues.... (early 80s for the TT paints right?).
