On the Digitrax Super Chief system, and I assume most other Digitrax systems, there is an Option Switch - OpSw 15 which can be set to force a loco to speed 0 at the time of purging.  Purging is set initially at 200 seconds, when unattended locos will be purged to make room for other addresses to be selected.

So theoretically a creeping (unattended) loco will be stopped after 200 seconds.  Would this be enough to prevent any melting?

I had this switch set on my layout so that locos would stop if an operator went home with their throttle without zeroing the loco.

200 seconds is enough to melt a truck and at least one axle , I did that in less time than that ...
Thanks ,
Louis

That number is for how long the loco will be allowed to run at whatever speed step it was on when it was abandoned (not for how long the power will stay applied to the track during a short). Either way, 200 seconds is long enough to for a model to crawl long enough to suffer damage if it runs a switch.
