Briggs Models is considering producing the National Steel Car 44’11” BN / BNSF Coil “Cares Car” (series BN 686245-686448) in N scale.

These cars were specific to ATSF, BN, and BNSF.  They can be seen in unit trains but also often seen in ones or twos in manifest trains.

We worked the numbers and in order to make this project financially viable we would need to sell approximately 175-200 kits. The price will be $30 (Canadian) each and will include a great deal of etched parts and a cover. The modeller will need to supply trucks and couplers.

As this is, a different process compared to regular 3-D printing (i.e. Shapeways) there is no removal of the waxy material on the subject during the printing process and the quality of the printing is similar to injection modeled plastic kits. The kits and parts come ready to build.

This is only an expression of interest/order list. No cash up front from anyone. Once the models have been completed and ready for purchase, I will contact you and it will be put it up for sale on the Briggs Models website. You will be able to order directly from the site by using PayPal, credit card, or by mail if desired.  http://www.briggsmodels.ca

If you are interested in having this kit produced please email me your contact information and the number of kits you might be interested in which I will pass on to Jeff. As always the proceeds for this car go into the next one. Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone who may be interested or post elsewhere.

Kind regards,

Chris Dittmar

If you are interested in having either of these kits produced please email me your contact information...

Is there more than one car style under consideration that you would like feedback on?  I'm still in for two dozen NSC cars.

Sorry Gary. I was going from a template I use for expressions of interest and I guess I didn't proof read it properly.

It is just the NSC car at this time.

Thanks,

Chris

I would be interested in at least 20 cars, in ATSF (10) and BNSF (10).  We provide/assemble trucks and couplers.  Are the cars coming painted and with decals already applied?  (I'm new to this process, sorry if that's a dumb question).

Hi Mike

It is essentially like building a resin kit, but the material is much more like injected moulded plastic.

You will need to supply the trucks/Couplers,and complete the building, painting and decaling yourself. I use regular CA glue. I have attached a link to our instruction sheet for the TOFC Flat Car. I think you will get a good idea of the building process from this. Also, Tim Horton has a very nice RS-3 build article on the Railwire N scale page. I have added that link as well. If you have any question please don’t hesitate to ask me.

Chris, please add another ten to my forecast, making it sixteen...this is one of the only things I need, might as well do it up right.  Thanks!

Does anyone make the decals for these cars, or make them anymore?

I swear I seen some before, but can't seem to find them this morning

BNSF is currently running a unit train of these guys with coils from Granite City, IL to Pittsburg, CA.  The power is set up 1x2 - and it must make for a fun ride across the Cuba Subd.

The unique thing about these cars are their extended drawbars... they look so odd on a short car.

I've just been informed this project is now a go, and will include appropriate decals at no additional charge.  Way to go, Briggs!  I can hardly wait!

One of the worst trains to run.

I couldn't find the price on these?
Probably right in front of my face.
