I got the chance to ride behind Southern Pacific #18 on the Durango & Silverton this past Tuesday. This was definitely one for the ages, as the next time I see her operate will probably be on that short trackage out in Laws, CA. It's probably my #1 railfan experience so far. I've ridden that railroad several times and will again, probably this fall.  It is spectacular in every way. 8)  Also the Cumbres & Toltec and others in Colorado.  All excellent.
