So it would seem that there are two different PS-1s w/o running board.  The 037 00 000 has high brake wheel and ladders; the CN car pictured above is a different series wit low mountings.

Unfortunately MTL does not have any undec 037 00 000 in stock so I will have to wait until the body style is run again.

Right, so use the brakewheel end off a standard MTL box car.  Then it's just the two grabs that need to be replaced with a half ladder.

The closest match I could find for that model was a group of Southern cars that had the handbrakes lowered when the roofwalks were removed.



Even if one were to ignore the dimensional issues and replace the two grabs with a half-ladder, the model still doesn't have the door gussets or assymetrical doors....

This is why I wish Atlas would do the 50' version of the PS1 - better availability, more versions, and, with the separate parts, easier to kitbash. I have nothing against Athearn, but the MDC tooling is stagnant and no longer offers the flexibility a lot of modelers want, to be able to model.

Seconded.  The Athearn model is also difficult to convert to body mount couplers and MT trucks due to the metal floor and screw mount trucks.  An Atlas one with different doors would be nice.

Keep in mind that the new MTL PS-1 boxcars have the same distortion issues as the originals, while the MDC/Athearn cars do not.

The new MTL cars with the new floor have the short body issues?

That only works if undecorated models are offered, which is no longer a certainty with Atlas.

On the PS box cars by MTL, the basic problem with the body is that the body is too tall. (the 60' hi cubes have the opposite problem).

Well they have the 40' PS-1s with 8' doors in undecorated which I was pleased about.

Yeah, I have about a dozen undecs with various doors.  But newer Atlas cars like the 50' RBL and 4180 Airslides aren't being offered in undecorated and talking to Atlas at the show last weekend made it seem like this could be the way of the future for them.

Atlas usually bring in undecs on every freight car release. They just don’t bring in a large quantity, so you shouldn’t delay when they are available. And yeah, painted cars can be stripped.

But that's my point, undecs aren't even being made available on the two newest cars.   And after talking at the Atlas booth, I'm not going to be  surprised if this in the new normal (for freight cars).

And yeah, painted cars can be stripped.

Okay, so now you have an assembled and glued kit.  Not exactly the goal.

One thing I noticed at the last show in regards to undecs is that in previous years, the answer was always that people didn't buy them and how much of a pain they were in general.  This year was different.  Now the first thing said was they can't make the minimum numbers required from the (new) factories.  And while those are obviously tied together, it was a clear shift in message.  IIRC, the minimums doubled in many cases.

I called Micro-Trains and they are not able to supply an undecorated 37000 at this time; I will have to wait until they announce a run in this body style.  I realized that I have a 37000 here as my NP boxcar so was able to look it over.  The combination of high brakewheel, high ladders and no running board is a good start; will have to remove the upper portion of the ladders at the 'AR' corner and change the doors to 8', which M-T fortunately makes.
