So what we had at work was 3/4" PolyEthlyene, but I don't know if it was high density or not. I could easily leave a mark in it with a knife so guess it is too soft to use.

Well I tried cutting thin strips of styrene with new Xacto blade and metal straightedge. Edge kept sliding on styrene, and styrene would curl as I cut it. You probably knew that already. Might have try cutting part from basswood.
