structural shapes- punched box beams

I am practicing making I beams and box beams from wood in HO scale
The overall sizes are correct, flanges a touch too big but look great
I can't find information on punched box beams (oval holes in the side, though see them in pictures)
The lattice riveted beams look a bit intense to model at this scale (though I may try)

Am a carpenter/ cabinet maker and can't see buying stuff pre made when I have a shop and a sawmill  :P

anyone know when the punched ones came into use?
