N scale New Haven 8600s video

Watched this last night, and obviously couldn't help but notice the couple of Rohr Turboliner pictures that pop up in the video.  I would have no choice but to buy one if it were ever produced in N scale, having watched them along the Hudson River as a kid...

It looks like 6 of the parlor cars were rebuilt to coaches and went to Amtrak that way.

Indeed - note the single vestibule in the Amtrak photo.

In October 1974, the Friday of Columbus Day weekend, too many Boston college students headed home to New York for the weekend. I got on the Amtrak train in Providence and the train was so crowded, I had to stand in the vestibule (with the Dutch door open on this beautiful Fall afternoon). At New Haven, several cars - 8600 coaches - were added to the train and I rode the rest of the way on the comfortable bench seats of the former smoking lounge section. I don’t recall if they were in Amtrak paint, but more likely they were in PC livery for NH to New York commuter service.

What a pity they DIDN'T SHOW us how to open the passenger car to put the batteries inside.   



I don't want to break anything. How I should open it?

Hold the car upside down, vertically, cradled in your hands.  At about a half inch from the truck, use your thumbnails to spread the sides slightly.  Use your index fingers to push the truck up (and with it the floor at that end of the car).  Repeat with the other side.  Slide the floor/interior assembly out.  Remove the light board from it's vestibule supports.  Add the batteries, engraved lettering facing down.  Snap the board back into place, snap the floor back into the body.
