The sad thing here is that this was amongst the very last times the car float went across the Chesapeake Bay, even after a 7 figure repair cost in the mid 2000s. Bay Coast RR interchanged them to Norfolk Southern, who interchanged them to the Delaware Coast Line. Bay Coast RR is no more, and the Delaware Coast Line goes away at the end of this year as a railroad. The Delmarva Central RR, owned by Carload Express, will have all of the trackage rights in Delaware south of the canal, with the exception of what the MDDE railroad operates.

Something I found interesting and unexpected was using hoppers as idler cars. I realize decommissioned hoppers are used nearly everywhere as buffer cars, but as idlers for ferry loading puzzles me. I would think the whole notion of "idler flats" is done that way for a reason - given all the personnel necessary to supervise a dangerous operation, you'd want maximum visibility everywhere.

The Bay Coast had an MRS-1, but that met the torch some time ago. I don't know of a functioning ALCO in the last ten years on their railroad. The DCLR, on the other hand, have several functioning ALCOs and two GE engines.
