Weekend Update 11/25/18

I just finished up a section truck for my short line.

 I spent most of the hobby time this week figuring out a way to make 8 of these lights...



...which light the fueling and sanding tracks at the east exit of the Nelson shop.  Here is what I came up with...

Masts soldered up around lengths of 0.032 dia brass tubing which plugs into square tube sockets.





Hangers from bent 0.015" steel wire soldered to the top of the mast.



The reflectors are sheet metal which look to be deep drawn. They are rectangular the bottom tapering to a rounded cone at the top.  I tried heat forming them out of 0.010" thick styrene over a carved hard wood dowel.

Finally punch them out with a sharpened piece of rectangular tubing





And first test piece assembled with LEDs installed

The opening picture:  It looks like the car is also missing its paint, as there are no markings on the end.  The autos don't seem to be well painted either.  With the truss sides, it looks like that was a wood-sheathed boxcar.  Autos are driven into the cars, so they have to have gas in the tank.  I wonder if the car caught fire, and the wood sheathing was burned off?  That could also account for some of the warping, beyond just the collision.

I'd say this was an accurate assessment, based on the high-res version of the image.

I'm gonna have to agree as well that it burned. Another hint is you'll also
notice that there are no tires on the rims. Most likely burned off in the fire.
I am surprised though that the tack board on the car end remained untouched!!!

I was able to fit my newer Atlas China SD9 shell on an older Kato chassis with some sanding. Here’s a quick photo, I’ll post more in the technical thread that was started.

Not much progress was made on the Oregon Joint Line over the summer due to a trip to Europe followed by training for and accomplishing a Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike in one day (24 miles!).  But I'm now going full blast on finishing the area around Snowline siding (no there won't be a snow scene) with this section between Bear Creek Viaduct and the North Switch Snowline the first to be completed (other than installing the photo backdrops).

Nothing really to take pictures of but I just finished installing my new control panel.  The table relocation has been completed for a few weeks now and my mainline is reconfigured. Next two projects are a complete retire of the layout to the new panel and design my yard tracks around the yet to be built Walthers roundhouse and turntable. I had seriously considered taking the whole thing down and boxing it all up just when my 9 year old discovered a box of Atlas sectional track and an old power pack. Those combined with a Kato Metro train on loan he has been going to town. Santa will be bringing him a new Kato UNITRACK starter set and some supplemental track sets so he should be in really good shape. So now I am back and motivated to model.
