Comparing the engine with the car behind it, it looks like they got the color wrong  :D

Well that is a nice train.

So what did CSX 4083 used to be?

With the cab and nose being replaced, it makes it more difficult to tell.  But, I would guess that it's a former SCL or L&N SD40-2 rebuilt to a CSX SD40-3.

You would guess correctly.  Those cabs are getting very common down here on the coast.

Australia is often referred to as The Lucky Country and here's proof why :P

40 years ago the former Victorian state owned railway took delivery of 10 EMD-powered C class locomotives, basically an SD40 wrapped up in an antipodean shell. They were used for 20 years as primary power on the Melbourne to Adelaide interstate corridor before being replaced by more modern power. After several years in storage they were purchased by a private operator, refurbished and upgraded. Despite several change of ownership, 7 are still operational and one preserved. Six are owned by my employer Southern Shorthaul Railroad.

Two weeks ago a pair of them C504/C507 were used on a fan special (raising funds for charity) from Sydney to Goulburn and back, on which I was lucky to travel. Seen here after arrival back in Sydney and waiting to return the empty cars - 20 October 2018.

Just ten days later the same pair were 3rd and 4th units and found 800 miles west of Sydney on a loaded rake of hoppers carrying feed grain from Tailem Bend in South Australia to drought affected areas of New South Wales. More remarkable was that this was the first time in 20 years that the C class had returned in numbers to their old stomping ground through the Adelaide Hills on the Melbourne-Adelaide corridor - 30 October 2018.
