Oh, the irony of the timing of your post. On Friday I decided to decant a can of Tamiya primer; on Saturday a friend informed me of your post. At least my decanting process was (mostly) successful although I smelled of propellant and paint afterward. I chose to decant by spraying through an old funnel inserted into an empty storage bottle: messy but effective. I wish I had waited one more day.

Lemo, I think this is very interesting thread.

I would just like to point out that Scalecoat makes a Zinc Oxide, and I think it's pretty much the same color that the old Floquil one was.  And it's smelly, noxious, solvent-based, and beautiful.  Everything you'd want from the Floquil version.

Good point. and it is ready for decals - no Glosscote needed, right?

I take this one step further, producing a less messy process.  Over the years I have accumulated many different nozzles (there are several different sizes and types used on aerosol cans). I have also collected a number of tubes from various spray cans.  The thin ones are from cans of WD40, "canned air" sprays, and Electronic "freeze-sprays".  The thick ones are the actual siphon tubes I extract from various empty aerosol cans.  They all come in handy.
Some nozzles were ready to use, while others I had to drill out or otherwise modify to accept the tubes.

Now I have an arsenal of decanting nozzles for pretty much any spray paint that is out there.  The neat part is that since the tube is tightly connected to the nozzle I don't have to worry about having to spray into a straw - I just point the tube into a jar and spray away.  No mess, no fuss.

To clean the nozzle I insert the nozzle's end which normally goes into the valve into my nylon pipette (also shown in the photo).  Then I put the end of the tube into a small partially-filled shot glass of lacquer thinner and I alternately suck and expel the thinner through the nozzle using the rubber bulb on the pipette. That rinses the nozzle and tube clean. Make sure to do this right after decanting, so the paint in the nozzle is still liquid.  Neat and clean!

@mmagliaro do you happen to have the item number of that? I tried looking here and didn't see Zinc Oxide.

@mmagliaro , Well I do have seven cans of this at $3 per can, and I absolutely HATE the nozzle.

I am so accustomed to the fine Tamiya nozzle that the only other device that will do is my airbrush, and so, this thread.

@peteski, it would take longer to clean one of those straws properly than it would to decant the paint with this method.

LOL!  Don't think so. My cleaning method was described under the photo. Probably about 30 seconds (and less than a minute).   Even faster then my express airbrush cleaning method.  :)  I should make a video of the process, but it takes too long to set up the shot.   :D

Gaaa!  My mistake.  It's calle "Oxide Red", not "Zinc Oxide".  But I still think it has that orangy red rust color that Pennsy fans have come to know and love from the old Floquil Zinc Oxide (believe me, I know that color well... I've touched up and "improved" a few engines for folks, brass and otherwise, with that paint!)

Where can I find info on your express cleaning for an airbrush. I do a full disassembly and cleaning between coats and colours. I would love to do something faster when I’ll be laying down another coat of the same paint soon. I have a Paasche VL. I use Scale Coat II, Floquil, Tru-Color, Rapido, True Line Trains, Polly Scale, and Testors MM/ MM Acryl. So basically everything.

Here:

You might find my cleaning method helpful for any organic solvent based (stinky) paints.  See https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=41067.msg511017#msg511017 .  Heck, read the entire thread.  :D

If you are a member of MR Video Plus go to the how too section and choose, "Airbrushing with Aron" episode #11.  Easy and efficient way to do it right the first time with no mess using Lacquer.  No holes punctured in the can either.  Try it.   Doug

I love it!
But according to John, I should just dump all these and punch holes in my cans.  :D
