You would think Athearn would at least do it in a different scheme!! Not only that but car 1 and 2 are different lettering from one another.

All being said, I am grateful that Athearn is doing the MEC. Love that they did the BAR wood chips hoppers. They were even going to do Portland Terminal woodchip, but I don't think they got done.

The Portland Terminal woodchip hoppers did get cancelled, which was too bad I had a bunch reserved. I have the Athearn pair from the last run of MEC 1 and MEC 2 they got the color closer then Red Caboose did. Athearn’s last run of MEC Berwick boxcars was wrong on all the colors though. Really wrong, plus wrong numbers.

I really wish they would use needle point bearings for the sound equipped units. I just got one and the thing won't roll because of the wiper pickups

I really do not know because I never really saw them in the original scheme. Also I seem to remember somebody saying that the 2 cars they had were in some kind of dedicated service but I cannot confirm that.When I got those two shots of both of them at that time they were destined for a local scrapper their in Leeds Maine I believe.

I'm hoping that one of our MEC guys on here can shed some light on this.

George Melvin, who used to work as a dispatcher for the MEC, once told me that MEC 1 & 2 were part of a pool with the BAR reefers and were MEC’s contirbution based on the mileage, I am pretty sure he confirmed that they hauled potatoes and blueberries in their service life’s as well.

Maybe Fox Valley could be persuaded to produce the MEC paint scheme on the R70-14 / R70-15 / R70-16 reefer tooling they got from Red Caboose via InterMountain.  Those even had the high brake wheel if remember correctly.
